Therapy in a Natural Context

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy 💪

ACT is an evidence-based psychotherapy that enables people to be present, open up, and do what matters. We call that psychological flexibility.

ACT is a process-based psychotherapy combining elements of contextual behaviourism, mindfulness, and relational-frame theory into one set of actionable processes that help suffering people shift from ineffective action to effective navigation of life’s many challenges. ACT helps people get back in control of their lives. It’s considered a third-wave cognitive-behavioural therapy and performs similarly to CBT in clinical studies.

Participants find it fun, light, human, relatable, and practical. During the therapeutic hour, the therapist works with the client to identify stuck-spots and learn and practice new skills that help to address the problems that come from difficult feelings and unhelpful thoughts. ACT treatment has been demonstrated in research settings to have exceptionally powerful therapeutic gain maintenance into the weeks and years ahead beyond time in treatment.

Compassion-Focused Therapy 🤲

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people respond to suffering—especially shame and self-criticism—with courage, wisdom, and kindness instead of attack or avoidance. In CFT we often talk about cultivating a “compassionate mind,” a way of relating to oneself and others that creates emotional safeness and supports flexible, values-guided living.

People typically experience CFT as human, validating, and deeply practical, even when it works directly with painful emotions like shame and trauma. During the therapeutic hour, therapist and client map out how the inner critic and threat system developed, identify current stuck spots, and learn and practice new compassion-based skills to respond differently to difficult feelings and harsh thoughts; research suggests CFT can reduce shame, self-criticism, and a range of mental health symptoms, with promising gains in self-compassion and wellbeing beyond the end of treatment

Ecotherapy/Nature Therapy 🌳

Nature therapy (ecotherapy) is an evidence-informed approach that helps people restore wellbeing by reconnecting with the natural world. We call that ecological connection and regulation.

Nature therapy is a process-based approach that integrates elements of environmental psychology, mindfulness, somatic awareness, and experiential therapies into practical, embodied experiences in natural settings. It helps people shift from dysregulation, disconnection, and mental fatigue toward grounded presence, emotional balance, and renewed perspective. Nature therapy supports people in re-engaging with their lives through the stabilizing and restorative effects of the natural environment.

During sessions, the therapist may guide clients in slow, attentive engagement with natural surroundings, helping them notice internal states, process emotions, and gently work through areas where they feel stuck. Practices can include mindful walking, sensory awareness, contemplation, walk & talk methods, or interaction with natural elements. Research suggests that nature-based interventions are associated with reduced stress, improved mood, enhanced attention, and lasting gains in wellbeing beyond the time spent in the natural setting.
